Background of Scrabble in Nepal

• Scrabble is a word game in which 2-4 players score points by placing tiles, each bearing a single letter, onto a game board divided into a 15x15 grid of squares, using trays and a bag containing 100 tiles. The name is trademark of Mattle and Hasbro. The game is sold in 120+ countries and is available in 30+ languages, after its development in 1938. It can also be played in cell phones or computers (e.g. woogles.io). • Scrabble contributes for developing skills like communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and leadership. There are 4000+ Scrabble Clubs around the world. • Pokhara Public Library (specially its section called American Corner Pokhara) started Scrabble Championship in Nepal from 2016 and now more than 40 out of 77 districts of Nepal are familiar to this game. Nepal & Bangladesh began playing it jointly from 2018. • Scrabble Club Pokhara (SCP) was formally established in 2019 with the vision of 'Transformation in Learning' through gamification. Each interested school is suggested to form a Scrabble Club in their school, send 2 of their best players to District Championship from where 25% of the total players are qualified for National Championship. A fixed number of players are then selected to compete for International Championship. • The mobile application named 'Wali Timer' is being used both as a timer and spelling checker on each table. The games are played with CSW Dictionary, 15 minutes time, and single challenge settings. The players need to keep the time and scores mutually. There will be referees under Championship Director to manage the event. Of course, the players need to challenge the words in case of any doubts! • The SCP officials decide on the rules of championship. Except the assigned officials, none is allowed to enter inside the championship area. Players and officials are encouraged, to the best of their abilities, to be cooperative and courteous in relation to the championship events. A scrabble event should be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Behavior that is deemed harmful to this objective will not be tolerated. Players should not bring any materials within the tournament area. They should cooperate, maintain peace and keep patience while playing. They should not insult, demean, or harass other players or officials. They should protect the tournament equipment. They should not leave the area before the formal completion of game. They should conduct in a sportsmanlike manner and give due regard to the authority of the officials and the rights of their opponents and other players. • In case of violating the codes of conduct or rules of game, the officials can expel the player from the game at any time. All mobile phones within the game area should be kept in flight mode or silent. The players shall occupy their seats only after the announcement of their pairings. The players need to properly handle the tiles, boards and trays. The winners must submit the final score of each round to the Championship Director immediately after the round. Secret to Good Health

Introduction

In last 3 decades so much pollution has increased in land, water and air. In air there is much pollutants due to smoke from factories and vehicles. In water there is so much pollution due to sewage wastes thrown into the rivers and ponds. In food there is so much pollution because of use of fertilizers and pesticides.

Over and above, due to modern lifestyle and facilities, people sleep late in night and get up late in the morning which destroys their natural bodily routine and digestion cycle.

Secret to Good Health

There is no possibility of one's becoming regulated, if one eats too much or eats too little, sleeps too much or does not sleep enough. Regulation and eating food which is good for health. He who is regulated in his habits of eating, sleeping, recreation and work can mitigate all material pains by practicing the yoga system.

Systematic efforts to direct thoughts, feelings and action towards the attainment of one’s GOAL. We need to regulate to achieve any goal in the life.

1.  Sleep

Our digestion cycle works with the sun, while the sun is in the sky it is easy to digest food and when sun sets then digestion is difficult, so best time to give rest to the body is between 9pm to 4 am.

According to Ayurveda,

3 hours of rest between 9 -12 pm in night is equivalent to 6 hrs. Rest.

12 – 3 am is equivalent to 3 hrs. Rest

3 – 6 am is equiv. to 1.5 hrs. Rest.

After 6 am sleep causes diseases

Early to bed, early to rise makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise. – Benzamine Franklin

If one sleeps more one becomes lazy and if one sleeps less one becomes crazy.

Train yourself to sleep and rise early.

Key to sound mind and body is a good night’s rest and an early jumpstart to your day.

2.  Food

We should take food according to our hunger and take your meals only at scheduled times and do not eat in between the meals. We should chew the food nicely.

ü Too much eating causes sleep

ü Too less causes weakness

ü Eat which is healthy, nourishing

ü Don’t eat junk food, too oily, too fatty

We become what we eat….

Our mind becomes what type of food we eat. Many times you might have seen also if we eat heavy food we start feeling dull. When we eat food which is a product of violence, exploitation then it causes us misery.

Short Story: Sadhu eating food which is cooked by a lady who had stolen all the ingredients.

Once there was a sadhu who was travelling to visit different holy places. He lived a simple life of truthfulness and utter dependence on God by begging food house to house and taking rest under a tree at night. Once he went to a simple hut for begging for food, that was the house of thieves. When he was standing at the door, a lady came and requested the sadhu to kindly come inside and be seated to accept the food cooked by her.

The lady being respectful to the sadhu brought all the preparations and served in a golden plate. The sadhu was surprised to see golden plate in such a small hut. He was sumptuously fed and was satisfied with the meal. The lady asked him to take some rest. The sadhu took rest and had to move to next destination. So, he left without informing the lady. The lady when she saw the sadhu has already left, noticed that the golden plate in which the sadhu had his lunch is not seen. She doubted may be this sadhu has stolen it, so she immediately went out to find this sadhu. After walking some distance she found him and stopped him asking” You are a sadhu. How can you steal my golden plate? You are supposed to be detached from worldly things. The sadhu could not believe it, he said “What are you talking? Just let me check my sack.” And he found the plate inside. He himself was surprised. He said “it’s impossible. I live a life of simplicity, truthfulness and honesty. I don’t remember when I brought it from your home. Let me think.” The sadhu then thought there must be something wrong. He asked her “What is the profession of your husbands? How can you have a golden plate living in a hut?” The lady replied. ”My dear sir, I am ashamed to reveal that my husband and son, both are thieves. Everything we’ve in our home is actually stolen by them including the food ingredients.” The sadhu then understood and said, “See! Because the food I ate was actually stolen and cooked with the mentality of robbery. It has crept into me and unconsciously I stole your golden plate. Please take it back. I don’t need it. In fact it’s an obstacle to my simple living.”

Lacto-vegetarian food is the best.

3.  Recreation:

Ø walking, doing yoga asana, swimming,  sports like playing kabaddi, kho-kho that boosts up one’s physical health, mental peace, strength and vigor.

4.  Work: (Study)

Set Goal à Make Plan à Get to work à stick to it à Reach Goal

Great things never came from comfort zones…

Give incremental push every day to yourself…

A short study about human mind, how it works

Our mind functions having different levels of awareness and processing, each with its sole functions and characteristics. These levels are often described as the conscious, subconscious, and superconscious mind. They are described below:

·         Conscious Mind: The conscious mind is the level of awareness that we experience in our everyday awakening life. It is the part of the mind that we are aware of at any given moment. It involves our thoughts, perceptions, feelings, and sensations that we actively pay attention to and can control to some extent. When you are intentionally reading this text or making a decision, we are applying our conscious mind.

·         Subconscious Mind: The subconscious mind lies below the surface of the conscious mind and operates outside of our immediate awareness. It stores memories, emotions, beliefs, and habits that have been learnt throughout our lives. This part of the mind is extremely powerful and influences a important portion of our behaviors, actions, and reactions. The subconscious mind can affect our decision-making and can be responsible for certain reflex actions and behaviors that we may not fully recognize or be aware.

·         Superconscious Mind: The superconscious mind is a higher level of consciousness that excels both the conscious and subconscious minds. It is often defined as a deeper, spiritual or universal aspect of the mind. The superconscious mind is associated with higher states of awareness, perception, creativity, and spiritual experiences. It is supposed to connect us to a collective consciousness or universal intelligence beyond individual existence. In some spiritual and philosophical traditions, the superconscious mind is mentioned to as the "Moksha."

The relationship between these levels of mind is often compared to an iceberg. The conscious mind represents the small visible part above the waterline, while the subconscious and superconscious minds make up the much larger, hidden part under the surface.

Understanding and attaching the power of these different levels of consciousness can have significant effects for personal growth, self-improvement, and spiritual development. Techniques like meditation, hypnosis, and mindfulness can help access and work with the subconscious and superconscious levels of the mind to promote healing, self-awareness, and self-realization. It is necessary to note that the concepts of subconscious and superconscious minds are more metaphysical and spiritual in nature and may not have universal scientific consent.

The human mind is an extremely complex and sophisticated system that directs our thoughts, emotions, perceptions, behaviors, and consciousness. While our understanding of the mind is continually evolving, several key principles and mechanisms help explain how it works:

·         Neurons and Neural Networks: The fundamental building blocks of the brain are neurons, particular cells that transmit and process information using electrical and chemical signals. Neurons are interconnected through complex networks, forming the basis for information processing in the brain. When neurons communicate with each other, they create neural pathways and circuits, supporting the brain to perform various cognitive functions.

·         Synaptic Plasticity: The networks between neurons are not fixed but can change and adapt over time through a process known as synaptic plasticity. This ability allows the brain to reorganize itself based on experiences, learning, and environmental stimuli. Synaptic plasticity is the basis for memory development and learning.

·         Memory and Learning: Memories are formed when certain neural pathways are reinforced through repeated use and practice. There are different types of memory, including short-term memory, long-term memory, explicit (normal) memory, and implicit (technical) memory. Learning occurs when new information is learnt and stored in the brain through various processes, such as repetition, association, and reinforcement.

·         Conscious and Unconscious Processing: The mind operates on both conscious and unconscious levels. Conscious processing involves our awareness of thoughts, feelings, and perceptions, while unconscious processing occurs without our awareness, such as automatic bodily functions or subconscious thought forms.

·         Emotions and Limbic System: Emotions play a vital role in the functioning of the mind. The limbic system, a set of interrelated brain structures, is responsible for processing emotions, motivation, and memory. Emotions can influence decision-making, behavior, and how we understand and respond to various situations.

·         Attention and Focus: Attention is the ability to focus on specific information or stimuli while filtering out unrelated or confusing input. The brain's executive functions, mainly regulated by the prefrontal cortex, play a role in attention, concentration, decision-making, and problem-solving.

·         Language and Communication: The mind's ability to use and understand language is vital for communication and cognitive development. Language processing involves several brain areas, including speech production area and language comprehension area.

·         Sensory Perception: The mind processes information from our senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell) to create our perception of the world. Different brain sections are responsible for processing and integrating sensory information.

·         Consciousness and Self-Awareness: Consciousness is the state of being aware of one's thoughts, feelings, and surroundings. The origin and nature of consciousness remain complex and subject to ongoing philosophical and scientific study.
